Bowley, Sir Arthur Lyon

Bowley, Sir Arthur Lyon (1869–1957; b. Bristol, England; d. Haslemere, England) An English social statistician. Bowley was a mathematics graduate at Cambridge University. In 1895 he joined the London School of Economics, being appointed as their first Professor of Statistics in 1919. He was the author of the influential textbook Elements of Statistics, first published in 1901, with a seventh edition in 1937. He was President of the Royal Statistical Society in 1938 and was awarded the Society's Guy Medal in Silver in 1895 and in Gold in 1935.
