Qld: Duty debts written off

The Queensland Government has decided not to pursue certain death duty debts incurredunder legislation it abolished 26 years ago.

Deputy Premier and Treasurer TERRY MACKENROTH says the government has decided to waivesuccession duty debts after news of a 99-year-old woman being asked to pay the tax leviedbefore 1977.

The treasurer says succession duty was abolished in 1977, but the duty still had tobe paid in certain circumstances where people had chosen to defer their payment.

Mr MACKENROTH says 54 deferral cases are outstanding, amounting to a total of about $40,000.

He says that given the passage of time and the relatively small number of people affected,he's instructed the Office of State Revenue to cease collecting outstanding money.
