SA: SA gas supplies should return to normal tomorrow: Santos

ADELAIDE, Feb 12 AAP - Gas supplies to major South Australian industries should returnto normal tomorrow, Santos Ltd said today.

Santos imposed the restrictions on major industries today following a shutdown at itsMoomba gas plant in the state's north.

The shutdown late yesterday followed the discovery of corrosion in a section of pipeline.

The company said the problem was found during routine maintenance and spare parts hadbeen flown to the area, where crews were working to repair the damaged section.

Santos spokesman Graeme Bethume today said the company aimed to have regular suppliesreturned from tomorrow morning.

SA Energy Minister Wayne Matthew said all available gas remaining in the pipeline systemwould be directed to Adelaide.

Under normal circumstances, gas from Moomba was also piped to Sydney but that marketwould now be supplied from alternative sources.

The state government also issued restriction notices to major industries includingthe state's electricity generators and the Port Stanvac oil refinery to apply from tonight.

Mr Matthew said households would not be affected at this stage.

"Restrictions are being introduced as a precautionary measure to direct gas to thearea of maximum benefit," the minister said.

"At this stage only large, industrial customers are expected to be affected.

"Securing the state's power supply will be the first priority."
