SA: Adelaide hospital to be among best in world, says Rann
ADELAIDE, April 13 AAP - An Adelaide hospital is being redeveloped to become one ofthe most advanced hospitals in the world, state premier Mike Rann said today.
Stage one of the redevelopment of the Lyell McEwin Hospital, in Adelaide's northernsuburbs, was nearing completion, Mr Rann said.
The project had set a new benchmark for environmentally sustainable development, he said.
When completed in 2006, the hospital will consume 15 per cent less energy than otherSA hospitals through the use of solar hot water, high performance glass to reduce airconditioning costs, and other energy-efficient initiatives.
Rainwater collection, treatment and reuse would save mains water consumption by 10per cent, while large grassed surfaces and minimal paved areas would help reduce heatloading, Mr Rann said.
"There's lots of talk about the need to be more environmentally friendly in the waywe build our buildings, well the Lyell McEwin is showing Australia and the rest of theworld how to put all that theory into practice," he said.
"The hospital will also be one of the smartest hospitals in the world with a rangeof unique technologies incorporated into the design."
Those technologies included Intelligent Integrated Systems that were believed to bea world-first in integration for building "smart systems", high digital capacity cabling, and digital imaging records for X-rays able to be viewed around the hospital.
