WA: Australia II could vie for the Cup again
PERTH, Dec 18 AAP - Australia II returned to its home port of Fremantle today, 17 years
after snatching an historic victory in the America's Cup yacht race.
And one of the businessmen behind the famous 1983 win is lobbying to take the yacht
away again, to compete in the 150th America's Cup jubilee race in August next year.
Australia II has been on display at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney for 10 years,
but will take pride of place in the new Fremantle Maritime Museum when the museum opens
in 2002.
In the meantime, the 12-metre yacht will be housed in temporary accommodation in Fremantle.
One of the businessmen behind the 1983 race win, Warren Jones, said today he hoped
to gain approval from the museum this week to borrow the yacht to go to the jubilee race
off the Isle of Wright in August 2001.
The WA Maritime Museum has said it was keen to support the proposal, provided the group
of would-be racers headed by Mr Jones provided the funds and insurance, and returned the
yacht in time for the museum's opening.
Mr Jones said the group's main stumbling block now would be raising a minimum of $750,000
by February, to compete in the race.
"We can't start fundraising until early January (because of corporate Christmas closures),
and we need to raise up to a million dollars by February - if we want to present Australia
II to the world as she should be presented," Mr Jones said.
