Vic: Federal Government decides not to sell Point Nepean land

The federal government has decided to stop the controversial sale of former defenceland at Point Nepean.

Defence Department sources say the land will be turned into a public park with a marineand coastal research centre.

The Age reports the surprise reversal by Canberra is a victory for community activistsin the Portsea area who have waged a long campaign to keep the site in public hands.

Under the new plan to be announced this week, the site will be split into two.

The 55 hectares of bushland will be managed as a park alongside the existing MorningtonPeninsula National Park, but will not be handed over to the state government.

A public tender will be announced for the remaining 30 hectares, including buildingswhich will be offered on a long-term lease.
